Cat Kitten Feline
Emie86 asked:

We just brought an adult male cat into the house yesterday, after someone we knew tried to dump it off. I know Cats hiss at one another when a new feline comes to the house, but now the cat and the kitten i have are hissing and growling at each other as well! I am not sure what to do, doors are a no-no in my place,( bc the doors don’t allow you to put too many things in the room, this place is small.) I’ve kept the adult male i’ve brought in in the carrier, and i have only let him out when my cats are in the carrier. Thats another strange thing too, is that they only do the hissing bit when they’re out of the cage, if someone could give me some advice i’d be grateful, i definately don’t know what to do.

That’s not a good sign.. you will probably end up having to get rid of one or the other.. Cats that fight will ruin your home.

Well. You DO have the option of letting them duke it out and settling it on their own.

All cats eventually will. They just have to decide whose “territory” is whose, and then all should be well. Just make sure you supervise them. Only let them go at it for maybe five seconds before you intervene.

its not uncommon for the existing animals to react to each other that way its a hormonal thing triggered by the new comer and they just cant control it
there probably will be new boundary issues now for even the existing cats to rework with each other but im sure things will work out

Cats that live together have to establish the “pecking order” so to speak.
It will probably work itself out. I’ve had several cats at a time together at different times in my life.
I have a total of 5 now…only 2 sleep indoors at night, the rest are outdoors at all times. They have their friendships and their dislikes–just like humans–some of them get along well and some do not. They will “pick fights” with one another sometimes.
It will probably work itself out if you let it. They need to get used to each other.
About a year ago a brought a stray female (at the time she was probably 8 months + old) everyone adapted. One of the cats accepted her and they’re friends and some of the others just keep their distance–they don’t care for her. She’s a very gentle sweet cat also.
Just be patient and give them time. It may not go any farther than hissing. If it does, then the “pecking order” will probably be established then. Just don’t allow one to “bully” the other.

I took in a stray who just had 4 kittens and I’ve had the same problem. My boyfriend tries yelling and making loud noises but I’ve found the most effective things are talking in a happy baby/kitty voice, and/or calling the aggressor over and distracting them with a string. Also I have a tiny spray bottle filled with water so I can give them a mist when they get crazy. If you train them to respond to the tone in your voice you shouldn’t have to reach in and get scratched up trying to separate them. BE gentle and be sure to use positive reinforcement when they are good and calm toward each other. You do need a certain amount of space for each animal, but I know how it is to want to take them all home with you!

    Hope this helps! Good luck!
